DEADLINE EXTENDED: WIT’s looking for a fall Marketing Intern!

Are you studying marketing, communications, digital fundraising, or a related field? Interested in helping DC’s only nonprofit improv theater realize its full potential at a crucial time in its 28-year history? Would you like to work with a group of funny and talented people? Then you’d be a good fit for WIT’s next Marketing Intern!

About WIT:

Washington Improv Theater is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to spreading joy, combating social isolation, and facilitating creative self-discovery through the power of improv. Our core areas of activity are:

  • Improv performances, special productions, and festivals;
  • Improv classes, electives, and workshops;
  • Applied improv training through WIT@Work for clients such as corporations, government agencies, nonprofits, and NGOs;
  • Community outreach and partnerships designed to provide access to the transformative benefits of improv for all in the DC metro area.

Role:

WIT is seeking a self-driven and enthusiastic Marketing Intern, with strong video and content creation skills, to support our efforts to increase awareness of our activities, raise funds, amplify our mission, boost class enrollment, raise ticket sales, and reach a wider audience via social media and witdc.org.

This internship offers hands-on experience in nonprofit marketing, AV production, digital communications, and social media. It is ideal for someone who is passionate about live theater — and improv in particular — but candidates with an understanding of marketing trends and principles can also be successful in this role even if they don’t have theater or improv experience.

Main responsibilities:

In coordination with WIT’s External Relations Director Dan Miller and its Marketing and Development Manager Anna Nelson, the Marketing Intern will:

Audio and Visual Content Creation:

  • Create (i.e. shoot and edit) short, fun, and engaging video clips (for reels and stories) taken at WIT performances that illustrate how fun our shows are to watch;*
  • Create longer videos for social media and the witdc.org website that highlight WIT’s classes, offering viewers a chance to see how fun improv is to learn and how useful improv skills can be in real life;
  • Support the creation of video content about WIT’s move to NoMa, including video interviews with those involved in the design and fundraising processes, as well as video updates on the progress being made in the new space;
  • Conduct video interviews with ensemble performers, Harold team players, teachers, students, coaches, staff, volunteers, and alumni about the impact of improv and WIT in their lives;
  • Create videos that show the impact of WIT’s Community Outreach (including our free classes for residents of Wards 7 & 8, affinity groups, inclusion scholarships, and Improv for All workshops) and the impact of the support we get from institutional donors and individuals;
  • Create videos that show the impact of WIT’s WIT@Work program;
  • Create eye-catching graphics to promote WIT’s shows, classes, and workshops (in Canva Pro);
  • Produce photo galleries and stories for Facebook and Instagram, using images from WIT’s extensive online photo bank.

Website and Social Media:

  • Update WIT’s ticketing platform and website with upcoming performance details in a timely and accurate manner;
  • Develop and distribute engaging content across various platforms to raise awareness about WIT’s activities and engaged community;
  • Help WIT grow its following on TikTok and YouTube by supplying a steady stream of video content as outlined above;
  • Draft copy for social media posts, website updates, email newsletters, and other marketing materials as needed;
  • Update performer, teaching artist, and board member profiles on witdc.org as needed.
  • Support the production of WIT’s FY26 Impact Report.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Events:

  • Help organize a new edition of WIT’s collegiate improv showcase, CU@WIT, including drafting messaging and doing outreach to colleges and universities in the DMV, working with the Executive and Artistic Director on the run-of-show, managing logistical aspects, and promoting the event.

Time commitment: 20 hours per week from early-to-mid September through to and including the middle of December 2026.  This role is mainly remote, however interns must be based within a reasonable distance of Studio Theatre in northwest DC, where WIT is currently based. Some evening and weekend work is to be expected (to record performances and showcases, provide support at in-person events, etc.) This time will count towards the intern’s weekly commitment.

Compensation: This is an unpaid position, but we are happy to work with the selected candidate to offer college credit instead. Interns are able to take WIT core curriculum classes and see as many shows as they like for free. We also offer opportunities to do paid Front of House work ($18 per hour) on the sidelines of the internship.

Qualifications:

This Marketing Internship is open to undergraduates (rising juniors and seniors), graduate students, and recent graduates, as well as individuals with equivalent skills and work experience in the fields of marketing, communications, AV production, public relations, or a related area. Specifically:

  • Experience shooting and editing videos for online use (please tell us about your experience, what software you’ve used, and share two or three examples of videos you’ve produced);
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Familiarity with digital marketing concepts and best practices, including social media platforms;
  • Strong graphic design skills and experience with tools like Canva;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

* These will often need to be created with a quick turnaround.

If you don’t tick every single box but have a deep passion for comedy/improv as a tool for social connection, community empowerment, and human joy, we strongly encourage you to apply.

Washington Improv Theater is committed to creating a diverse environment and is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration without regard to race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability, age, or veteran status.

Please complete this form and send a copy of your resume to: comms@witdc.org. We will be interviewing on a rolling basis and ask that all applications be submitted no later than Aug. 19, 2026 at 11:59 PM. Only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted (by email).
