Musical Improv Level 1: Foundations with Greer Smith and Michael Gottlieb
Discover the joy of improvising songs and the craft of musical theater.
Discover the joy of musical improv, and create fully-realized songs on the spot! No prior singing or songwriting experience necessary.
In this eight-week course, you’ll create instant characters with emotional integrity who sing their comedic (or dramatic) point of view. You’ll learn the two basic song structures — verse/chorus and tagline — needed to turn every improvised song into a full-fledged musical number. The class will culminate in a showcase.
ABOUT GREER
Greer began performing after daring herself to take classes at the DC Improv and Washington Improv Theater. She was a member of WIT ensembles iMusical and onesixtyone, as well as a cast member in ComedySportz and The Blue Show at the legendary Comedy Spot. Most recently, Greer coached the incredible conservatory team, Penelope’s Anthem. If you do nothing else today, find out when you can see them perform. And take time to enjoy. Gazpacho!
ABOUT MICHAEL
Michael’s music career began with a bang: his high school band played the opening for Arby’s on Sunset Blvd. At Yale, he composed and music directed several musicals, then pivoted to songwriting, including the soundtrack for an educational film. Since 2013, he’s played with Door #3 in DC and NYC, taught at Flying Pig Improv in Wichita, and performed with percussionist Brendan Bailes at Studio Theatre and Griffith Park (not where Adele performed).
