John Sener

Washington Improv TheaterJohn Sener is a retired educator, author, and consultant whose 40+ year career in education and training offers a uniquely broad mixture of practical experiences.
John founded and led a consulting practice focused on co-creating knowledge leading to positive change in education, learning, and society. He was a pioneer in online learning, directing development of associate programs in information technology, business management, and the nation’s first distance education associate engineering degree program.
He has served on several boards for organizations focused on online education, academic quality, and suicide prevention, and he also has extensive experience with managing and writing grants. He holds a master’s degree in education from Johns Hopkins University and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Oberlin College.
John is particularly drawn to the prospect of working with people who believe that improv can make a positive impact on a city, community, and individuals, as he has experienced this firsthand through his own improv journey, including interacting with the WIT community on numerous levels.
John’s improv career started at a conference in Portland, Ore. in 2016, when he and his fellow team members were voted the best Coffee Quality Control Inspectors. He graduated from the WIT curriculum in 2018 and has been a longtime member of the indie group Follow the Lisa. He has also performed in online jams and shows with Dojo Comedy, Wham Bam Improv Jam (hosted by Second City), and Extreme Improv in the U.K. From 2022 to 2023, he organized and hosted a monthly series of improv shows at The Public Option which enabled local indie teams to perform regularly. His goal is to perform improv in all 50 U.S. states.
