WIT Ensemble The Hypothesis to Hold Auditions in October

WIT ensemble The Hypothesis is seeking to add between two and five performers via auditions to be held in October.

The Hypothesis seeks scientists and science enthusiasts** who have at least one year of improv experience (classes, workshops, shows, etc). We strongly encourage people with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and voices to consider auditioning.

**If this is helpful: The Hypothesis is looking for improvisers who have a connection to science. You do not need to have a college degree in science or work full time in a lab (although of course that is also welcomed!), but we are looking for performers who are knowledgeable about and/or engaged with science, and are excited about the mission of The Hypothesis! That could mean anything from working in a scientific field to having a science subject that you love to read/learn about to being someone who enjoys nerding out over science facts! If you worry you are not “science-y” enough, we still strongly encourage you to apply!!!!

Here is a link to the Google Form to register: The Hypothesis Audition Form

Open call auditions will be held on three dates:

Regarding skills, The Hypothesis is looking for cast members to have the ability to:

  • clearly pull and initiate premises from an opening
  • support and respond to initiations and ideas
  • establish relationships and emotional connections with your scene partner
  • quickly identify character point of view and scene dynamics / games
  • showcase emotional range and vulnerability
  • join and support scenes and mirror scene partners with energy and agreement
  • have experience in and/or a passion for science
  • radiate a clear sense of silliness, joy, and play

About The Hypothesis

The mission of The Hypothesis is to combine science and improv to both inform and delight audiences.

The Hypothesis starts each show by providing scientific information to the audience. Historically this information has been provided through a talk by a special guest scientist or by answering a science question from the audience. These openings both inform the audience and also provide a basis for a premise-based montage, which heightens and builds on itself as it goes. We are open to and excited about developing new formats once we add new members.

The team consists of scientists and science enthusiasts with diverse science backgrounds – ranging from neuroscience to biology, from climatology to psychology, and everything in between. In the past we have performed at improv festivals in Baltimore and DC, as well as performed at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History and partnered with Story Collider.

Our shows are supportive and silly. We strive to have strong premise-based initiations, and then follow the fun wherever it leads. We are nerds at heart, adore each other, and have each others’ backs no matter what.

The Hypothesis cast features: Ceci De Robertis, Tom Di Liberto, Nina Hsu, Jordana Mishory, Henry Ring, Goli Samimi, and Bethany Stokes. We tend to perform three or four times during WIT runs.

While The Hypothesis does not currently practice regularly, we are hoping to start hosting monthly optional rehearsals based on cast availability.

If you have any questions, please reach out to Bethany Stokes at bethanyastokes@gmail.com.
